Mid-Atlantic Base offers its members access to a wide variety of events. Events at the 2004 USSVI National Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York were so numerous that the members attending the convention were unable to attend them all. There were tours of Saratoga Battlefield, a trip to the USS Saratoga Museum in Providence, Rhode island, a parade, luncheon, band concerts, and a banquet. In this photo, Base Storekeeper Phil Puschel steps through a watertight door aboard Soviet Submarine K-77. The vessel is on display as "Juliet U-484 " at the USS Saratoga Museum.
Mid-Atlantic Base members support public outreach activities with two nearby submarine museums. In this photo, Base members Walt Rutter, Chuck Walker, and Roger Reeves pause for a photo op in After Battery aboard USS Becuna (SS-319), a Balao-class submarine constructed by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut. Becuna completed five war patrols in the Pacific and is credited with sinking 18,600 tons of Japanese shipping. She is berthed inboard of the cruiser Olympia at the Independence Seaport Museum at Penns Landing in Philadelphia.
Since its inception in 2004, the Mid-Atlantic Base Picnic picnic has become one of the more popular events on our activities calendar. The event is catered so members can show up, have a good time, and walk away from the mess when it's time to leave.
Mid-Atlantic Base members are invited each year to travel to the Naval Submarine Base New London to participate in the annual Return to Sub School event. In the past, this event has included attendance at the graduation ceremonies at the school, tours of the Basic Submarine School at Wilkenson Hall, the Dive and Drive Trainers, the Escape Trainers, the DC Wet Trainer and other trainers. In this photo, base members tour the Ship Control Operations Trainer.
Collectively, Mid-Atlantic Base members have a large amount of submarine memorabilia in their possession. In 2003, the Base was invited to provide materials to populate a display case at the Lewes Public Library. The material loaned to the Base by its members more than filled the case.
